Eagle Ford Shale

The Eagle Ford Shale once represented one of the top resources for oil and natural gas around the world. Located across 12 counties in south Texas, the Eagle Ford Shale and its outcrops stretch from the Texas-Oklahoma border toward the Rio Grande River, San Antonio, the Quitman Mountains in West Texas, and Big Bend National Park. It is also found in east and south Texas, as well as Mexico. Cities within the play include San Antonio, Dallas, and Corpus Christi. The Eagle Ford Shale is located across 20,000 square miles and has an average thickness of 250 feet.

The first well in the play was drilled by Petrohawk in LaSalle County in 2008. Afterward, the play quickly became a popular source for crude oil, dry natural gas, and wet gas/condensate. One feature which aided its popularity is the high amounts of carbonate in the area’s shale, which increases the rock’s brittleness and provides greater results with hydraulic fracturing. Eagle Ford Shale is also known as one of the greatest economic developments in Texas history, with nearly $30 billion spent on its development and a local economic impact of over $60 billion in south Texas. As one of the biggest producers of gas and oil in the world, the play provided nearly 3 billion cubic feet of natural gas and nearly 600,000 barrels of condensate and oil every day in 2013. Production dropped sharply in 2015 due to the fall of crude oil prices and has yet to fully recover.
